Well I Must Close My letter so no more at present But Remain youre friend

Sarah Thompson
To Dan Dawalt
wright soon

Note: In the 1860 Census for Elmwood, Peoria Co., Illinois, there is a Sarah Thompson (age 17, b. Indiana), living with parents Elijah (age 50) and Elizabeth (age 34, b. Indiana). Also in the census were Sarah’s siblings Esther (age 14, b. Indiana), John (age 11, b. Indiana), Julia (age 9, b. Indiana), Jane (age 7, b. Indiana) and Josephine (age 2, born Illinois). Given Sarah’s age and the fact that she mentions Daniel’s sister Mary, I think Sarah was writing to Dan Dawalt, Jr.

I believe that the writer of this letter was the daughter of Elijah Thompson who was the son of Roger Thompson and Esther Ann Robinson. Prior to moving to Illinois they lived in Washington County, Indiana.

This letter was found in the collection of Daniel Dawalt. Sr. letters in the Filson Historical Society, Louisville, KY.
