Helen Ruth Grigsby DeVault, age 94, of Knoxville, TN passed to her heavenly home on April 7, 2015. A beautiful Lady who had a great desire to help others, often sacrificially, was a devout Christian of the Baptist faith. She was a member of Belmont Heights Baptist Church for over 70 years where she served God and touched many lives as a teacher, missions leader, nursery and Bible School worker. Helen was born on December 10, 1920 to Henry G. and Hollie B. Grigsby in Luttrell, TN. She graduated from Horace Maynard High School as Salutatorian of her class. Shortly after, she married Lawrence DeVault and moved to Knoxville, Helen became the consummate homemaker and mother. She was an excellent seamstress, creating elaborate wedding gowns to intricate doll clothes for family and friends. She possessed a "green thumb "and always had a fruit and vegetable garden which she shared with others. She also cultivated beautiful flowers and shrubs. She worked in the cafeteria at West View Elementary School; as a nurse's aid at Baptist Hospital and a US Census Taker and at the 1984 World's Fair all of which she greatly enjoyed. Helen loved everyone, was loved and respected by all who knew her and will greatly missed.
She is survived by her daughter Frances Frady; grandchildren Tracy F. (Mike) Best, Rhonda F. Lane, and Mark G. (Tracy) Frady; great grandchildren Nathan and Evan Best, Constance Prater, Taylor and Katelyn Frady; great-great grandson, Elijah Riley King, other survivors are beloved foster daughter, Charlene Franks Underwood (Les) and their sons, Brandon and Justin Galyon; sisters Agnes G. Wolfenbarger and Billie G. Goad; special nieces Johnnie Sharp and Peggy Clevenger; special friend Ethel Collins. Predeceased by parents, spouse; sister Christine Clevenger; brothers, Henry and Howard Grigsby; grandson, Jeffrey L. Parton; son-in-law, Ralph C. Frady; grand son-in-law, Eddie Lane.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 pm in the Berry Highland Memorial Funeral Home Thursday, April 9, 2015. A funeral service will follow at 7:00 pm with Rev. Gene Wood officiating, Special speaker Donnie Whaley. Family and friends will meet in Friday, April 10, 2015 at 12pm for a 12:30 interment service at Berry Highland Memorial Cemetery. Afterwards, he worked for NASA in Huntsville and then re-enlisted in the Navy Tar Program during the Viet Nam era and was assigned to Knoxville. When enlistment was up, he stayed in Knoxville where he worked for Union Carbide and then at Cedar Springs Presbyterian Church. After his second retirement, he enjoyed working at WalMart - Turkey Creek, and was still employed at the time of his death. Ralph loved music and enjoyed playing the piano and guitar. He was of the Baptist faith and attended Belmont Heights Baptist Church. He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, a sister, step-son Jeff Parton, son-in-law Eddie Lane and father-in-law Lawrence DeVault. He is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Frances DeVault Frady; son Mark (Tracy) Frady, daughters Tracy (Mike) Best and Rhonda Lane, grandchildren Nathan and Evan Best, Taylor and Katelyn Frady, and Constance Prater, mother-in-law Helen DeVault, all of Knoxville, sons Steve and Phillip Frady, and granddaughters Felicia and Jessica Frady, all of Los Angeles, CA; sisters Irene Clay and Sue (Bob) Lipscomb of Huntsville, AL; other family to include Charlayne Underwood, Brandon and Justin Galyon, and his WalMart family. Mr. Frady is at Highland Memorial Funeral Home, 5315 Kingston Pike, where the family will receive friends Saturday from 4:00 - 6:00 p.m. with the service to follow, Rev. Josh Glandon to officiate. The graveside service, with Navy Honors, will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Highland Memorial Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Nathan and Evan Best, Seth Brooks, David Grigsby, Brandon and Justin Galyon. Honorary pallbearer is J.D. Goad.
