BASIC FACTS
James Franklin "Franklin" Devault was born on 7 November 1854 in Tennessee.
James Franklin "Franklin" Devault had reference number 34821. There were two Franklin or Frank DeVaults born about 1855 in Union County, Tennessee and this has led to some confusion. The first was James Franklin DeVault, son of William C. DeVault and Anna Sellers. The second was Franklin "Frank" DeVault, son of Isaac Loona DeVault and Harriet Kelly. (Sometime "Kelly" is spelled "Kelley." I have chosen the "Kelly" spelling.) These two Frank DeVaults were first cousins. In an old genealogy I received from Dan DeVault, it showed that the son of Isaac and Harriet DeVault was married to Paralee Kelly. I suspect that this was in error. I think it was the other Franklin DeVault, the James Franklin DeVault that was the son of William and Anna DeVault that was married to Paralee Kelly. I think the Franklin DeVault, son of Isaac and Harriet, was married to Augusta Livvia Dyer. (Sometimes "Dyer" is spelled "Dyre" I have chosen the "Dyer" spelling.) .I base this primarily on the 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census records. Here is how it goes:
In 1860 the family of Isaac and Harriet (Kelly) DeVault looked like this:
1860 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
DeVault, Isaac, male, age 33
-- Harriet, female, age 32
-- John, male, age 10
-- Franklin, male, age 5
In the above record, Isaac and Harriet clearly had a son named Franklin born about 1855.
By 1870 Harriet (Kelly) DeVault had died. Somehow Isaac and his children missed being counted in the census. (At least I have not been able to find them.) However, the family of William and Anna (Sellers) DeVault looked like this:
1870 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
DeVault, W. C., male, age 47
-- Anna, female, age 40
-- Margaret, female, age 21
-- Elizabeth, female, age 18
-- John M., male, age 17
-- James F., male, age 15
-- Isaac L., male, age 13
-- Eliza E., female, age 11
-- George S., male, age 5
-- Maynard C., male, age 2
-- Dewey G., male, age <1
The above James F. DeVault is James Franklin DeVault born about 1855.
Also listed in the 1870 Census is Augusta Livvia Dyer, who I believe eventually married Frank DeVault, son of Isaac and Anna.
1870 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
Dyre, Mary, female, age 42 (Sometimes Dyer is spelled Dyre.)
-- Andrew M., male, age 18
-- Parley J., female, age 10
-- Augusta L., female, age 10 (Parley & Augusta may have been twins.)
-- Caldona P, female, age 9
Now comes the 1880 Census where I will try to put my case together. First let's take the family of Isaac and the now deceased Harriet (Kelly) DeVault.
1880 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
DeVault, Isaac, head, male, age 53
Kelly, Florence, niece, female, age 15
DeVault, Jane, daughter, female, age 15
-- John H., son, male, age 31
-- Phoebe M., daughter-in-law, female, age 15
-- Jessie, grandson, male, age 8
-- Willie, grandson, male, age 5
-- ALmeda, granddaughter, female, age 3
In the above record, Frank DeVault is not living with his father. In fact, he is married to August and they have a son, Arthur.
1880 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
DeVault, Frank, head, male, age 25
-- Augusta, wife, female, age 20
-- Arthur, son, male, age 1
In the above record, the ages come from a careful reading of the actual census image. The transcription is incorrect. I have a death certificate for Arthur. It says his parents were Frank DeVault and Livvia Dyer.
There is also a census record for the Paralee Kelly that would eventually marry the other Frank DeVault. The James Franklin DeVault that is the son of William and Anna (Sellers) DeVault.
1880 Census, Tennessee, Union County, Civil District 4
Kelly, Samuel, head, male, age 40
-- Caroline, wife, female, age 41
-- Paralee, daughter, age 16
-- eight more children and a grandchild
So, I contend that the Frank DeVault, son of Isaac and Harriet, was married by 1880 to Augusta Livvia Dyer. I also contend that the James Franklin DeVault, son of William and Anna, was not yet married to Paralee Kelly, but would soon be.
