In the 1860 Census children John W. Payne (age 7) and Mary E. Payne (age 1) are shown living with the family of Lewis and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne. For a time, several genealogies, including my own, showed John and Mary as the last two children of Lewis and Susannah. However, I'm pretty sure that John and Mary are the children of William Harvey and Harriet (Hatley) Payne, making them the grandchildren of Lewis and Susannah. This is not entirely rank speculation: 1) Harriett "Hattie" (Hartly) Payne died in late 1859. It is likely that her husband, William Harvey Payne, would have placed his youngest children with their grandparents. William, himself, probably not doing too well, died in 1861; 2) Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was certainly too old to be the mother of Mary and probably too old to be the mother of John; 3) On Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling's death certificate, her mother is identified as "Hattie;" 4) In all census records where parents' birth locations are shown, both John W. Payne and Mary Ellen (Payne) Boling say their parents were both born in Indiana. (Lewis Payne was born in Ohio and Susannah (Dawalt) Payne was born in Tennessee, while William and Harriet (Hatley) Payne were both born in Indiana); 5) In the 1870 Census, John W. Payne is shown living with Jeremiah Payne. If I am correct about his parents, Jeremiah would be his uncle. Mary Ellen Payne was still living with her grandmother, Susannah (Dawalt) Payne; and 6) John W. Payne was married in 1874. He named his first son William H. Payne, after his father.
