STEVEN EDWARD ZINN
Steven Edward Zinn, 27, of Chico, CA died early Sunday, July 13, 2008 immediately following injury sustained in a single vehicle motorcycle accident at Hwy. 149 and Hwy. 70.
He was enroute back to the Brush Creek Ranger station near Berry Creek where he began his career as an Engine crewmember in 1999, five days after high school graduation.
After 5 days fighting the fires near Berry Creek, Steven drove his truck to Chico to visit home and family. Around 10:45 p.m., he rode his motorcycle downtown to enjoy eating his favorite food at his favorite pizza place, Woodstock's. He returned home and before going to bed, visited with his sister and soon to be brother-in-law remarking how much he looked forward to their wedding the following Saturday in which he was to be in the wedding party along with his fiancée, Genevieve, of Redding.
Typically an extremely alert person, he was tired but unable to sleep so he decided to head back to the station and would have driven his truck back to Brush Creek but his pack with his truck keys were stolen that night.
For up to nine months, many USFS Fire personnel are stationed and on fire assignments in the tough terrain of remote locations in our National Forests, distant from their home, friends, family, and media. When given a few hours opportunity, many are no stranger to making a dash for home to spend even an hour.
By July 12th, like many other fire personnel in California, Steven and the F R hotshot crews had already worked 400 overtime hours fighting fires from Santa Cruz to Northern California.
The unfortunate folks who came along after the accident reported being passed by him long before the Hwy. 149 merge into Hwy. 70. One said to be on Hwy. 99 near Books Family farm, the other near Oppenheimer Rd., midway on 149. We're sad for what they experienced, yet thankful to them for stopping and for their call to emergency help. The last official statement to us was that it was unknown if there were any other vehicles involved in the accident or even nearby.
Born January 13, 1981 in The Dalles, Oregon, Steven began first grade in Portland, Oregon and on December 1, 1987, moved to Chico with his family where he went to Marigold Elementary, Bidwell Jr High, and Pleasant Valley High School, where he especially enjoyed John Goodes construction/carpentry class, Ms. Hollie's German class, and being on the varsity football team. He continued to study and learn the German language over the following years, planning one day to visit Germany and other European countries. Six days prior to the accident he had purchased his round trip flight for the month of December that would bring him into the city of Alicante, Spain where brother, Carl would be finishing up his semester of Study Abroad.
Along with friends, Jeff Kelly and Sean Emry, he worked his senior year of high school at the Sicilian Café. He enjoyed hearing he was the fastest dishwasher they'd ever had. During that year he spoke with Kent Swartzlander, then superintendant of the notable Plumas Hotshots, about joining the forest service and subsequently got his application in for the upcoming season.
He was intensely interested in and dedicated to his job with the US Forest Service. At the time of his death, he was employed by the Plumas National Forest. He was a Lead Forestry Technician crew boss for the Feather River Hotshots, of the Feather River Ranger District, Oroville, CA. He was proud of each of the crew members and had so much fun training them and with them. He had a lot of history and affection for Captains, Ray Torres, Mark Davis and crew boss, James Maynard, all with who he had worked many years. Steven was really excited about the excellent organization and hotshot teamwork they had developed together with the two crews. He also highly valued his friendship with FRRD Battalion Chief, John Estes, who was his first Captain in 1999. As well as held in awe, his mentor, Kent Swartzlander, Fire Chief of Six Rivers NF.
Early on, John Estes trained Steven in the art of tree falling which he quickly took to. He was proud of his expertise and soon became a certified B-faller. At Brush Creek's "Zinn's" Saw Shop he kept everything in top organization. He kept the saws sharpened and operational. For inspiration he posted photos of the crew and a log of fires they'd been to, noting the ones with lots of poison oak. He loved to invent things and invented a fire line tool he nicknamed the "pound-a-hoe." Because of it's usefulness, they created enough for them all to use.
Over the years he absorbed a vast amount of knowledge and experience with the Forest Service, in training and on the many fires he went to. He excelled and for the last third of his second season he became the youngest member of the Plumas Hotshots of Quincy. One day he called home from a tiny spot of cell reception, to say hi, from the top of a mountain in Montana after the shots had been dropped off for a week to fight fire.
The next seasons he served on the Brush Creek handcrew and engine crew, senior firefighter on an engine crew at the Challenge Ranger station, 2004 he was a Helitack crewmember at Quincy Helibase where he had a blast learning to rappel from the hovering helicopter, 2005 he received a certificate of merit for extra effort in supporting Plumas Engine 30 at Brush Creek and for acting as Fire Engine Operator. He also was totally stoked at getting to work with the Dozer Operator and eventual training to run the dozer.
June 2006, upon coming back from weeks at fires in the southwest, Steven broke his arm in a couple places falling from a skateboard. A week later he was headed to fires in Alaska where he cut off his cast so he could run the chainsaw and never seemed to suffer because of it.
He graduated from the US Forest Service's Advanced Wildland Firefighter Academy at McClellan AFB. He became certified as a Low and Technical High Angle Rope Technician and received a certificate of merit in recognition of his leadership, technical expertise in training and developing the PNF FRRD's Low Angle Rescue Procedures.
Steven began his connection with plants, flowers, and trees in Chico's Bidwell Park. There he enjoyed many hours of hiking, running, swimming, rope climbing, Mt biking, and Ultimate Frisbee. Many of those adventures shared with long time friend, Sean Corbet and later, the love of his life Genevieve.
From junior high past high school, Steven enjoyed spending many hours with the SCA (society for creative anachronism), researching and reenacting medieval times. He began as a Page for James and Hillary Cornwell of Chico. He learned the art of archery and in stages learned the art of medieval sword and shield fighting. He made armor and knit the metal to create his own chainmail. He also made kilts for himself and his brother, Carl.
He met his best friend and life partner, fiancé Genevieve 5 years ago through her service with the US Forest Service and once said "she's a dainty flower but just like a guy and I think she could even out run me," no easy task for anyone. Together they ran in several Bidwell Classic half marathons, a couple Chico Frost or Fog quarter marathons, the Camp Pendleton Mountain Warfare Training Challenge, as well as a couple Turkey Trot runs in Redding. He fit right in with her family, enjoying many happy times and loving them so much.
Steve's amazing energy and intelligence took him in many directions. He was an avid reader of history and technical manuals of all kinds. He loved dirt biking, paint ball wars, water coloring, oriental art, soccer, target practice and was a remarkable marksman at an early age. He listened to music of all kinds, including recently some Opera. He played drums, guitar, and wanted to learn to play the bag-pipes. He even made his own bongo drums. He took a few Art and Horticulture classes at Butte College. He loved gardening so it wasn¹t unusual for family or friends to come home to find new plants and flowers in their yard, or established plants relocated.
All these he enjoyed in the limited amount of time each year that he had at home.
