Mamie Grace McSherry1,2,3,4,5,6

BASIC FACTS
Mamie Grace McSherry was born on 16 November 1861 in Pennsylvania.1,3 She died on 4 May 1941, at age 79, in Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.5 She was buried in Probably Green Hill Cemetery, Martinsburg, Berkeley Co., West Virginia.5 Mamie Grace McSherry was also known as Mamie G. McSherry.7 She had reference number 55845. She was a School teacher (1880, 1890); boarding house keeper (1900); public school teacher, York, Pennsylvania. (1914); teacher, at home (1920); teacher, Salem Lutheran Orphanage, (1931); teacher, York schools (1939); orphanage housemother (death certificate.)2,5,8,9 She was enumerated on the census in Berkeley County, West Virginia (1870); Allegany County, Maryland (1880); Roanoke City County, Virginia (1900); Roanoke County, Virgnia (1920 - 1940.) She resided in Cumberland, Allegany County, Maryland (1890); Roanoke, Roanoke County, Virginia (1900, 1908); Salem, Salem City County, Virginia (1908-1941.)5,10 She was educated Completed high school; State College summer class (1914.)10 "Mary" or "Mamie?" The McSherry's first child appears to have been Mary E. McSherry. Mary was born about 1858 and died about 1862. Their second child was Mamie Grace McSherry and that is how she appears in most records. However, in the 1870 Census record she is shown as "Mary J. McSherry." In the 1880 and 1900 Census she is shown as "Mary G. McSherry."
Note from the Genealogy prepared by Cathy (Crabtree) Cook.
Her death certificate says she was born in Maryland.- The informant was Titus. C. Rohrbaugh of Salem Va. He was the superintendent of the Lutheran Orphanage where Mamie lived, worked and died.. It appears that records coming from 1930-1940 census, death certificate, and obituary all which share some errors, may have originated from the orphanage. Her claim to be a teacher, may be professionally valid. It was not unusual to take teacher training courses in high school. Her listing as "housemother" may be the best word to cover at least her later employment as it would include all the other titles - "teacher" as in informal instruction and "nurse".- which I did not document. There were 3 "retired employees" living at the orphanage in 1940 including Mamie. One was listed as a teacher. Mamie and the 3rd person had no occupation listed. Were they there to provide the orphans with a "grandmother?"
