Parents
BASIC FACTS
John Lane Kirkpatrick, Jr., was born on 27 May 1841 in Morgan Co., Illinois.2 He and Mary Frances Munson were married on 15 September 1867 in McDonough Co., Illinois.4,5 He died on 5 October 1909, at age 68, in Macomb, McDonough Co., Illinois.2,6 He was buried in Camp Creek Cemetery, McDonogh Co., Illinois.7 John Lane Kirkpatrick, Jr., had reference number 32545. He was a Farmer (1880, 1900.)3,6 He was enumerated on the census in McDonough County, Illinois (1880, 1900.)6 In June of 1860, John had his left arm amputated after being wounded by a gunshot.8 From John P. Kirkpatrick
This man was the seventh of eleven children and he lived on the paternal farm until his father's death. He was born 27 May 1841 in Morgan County, Illinois, and died 5 October 1909, Macomb, Illinois. He is buried in Camp Creek Cemetery, McDonough County, Illinois. On reaching manhood, he bought 160 acres of the homestead and commenced general farming, stock-raising and feeding. This farm was in McDonough County, Illinois.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was married 15 September 1867 in McDonough County, Illinois, to Mary Frances Munson. She was born 26 January 1846 in Rushville, Schuyler
County, Illinois, and died 24 April 1910 in Macomb, Illinois. She is also buried in
Camp Creek Cemetery in McDonough County. Her parents were Eliphelet Philbrook
and Catherine (Sanders) Munson. Eliphelet was born 11 Jun 1817 in Colchester
Vermont. Catherine, his wife was born 22 January in 1821 in Maryland.
John Lane Kirkpatrick's mother, Catherine Matilda (Sims) Kirkpatrick, lived with him on his farm until her death on 8 January 1877. Kirkpatrick improved the farm,
enlarging it to 360 acres, including 120 acres of timber and pasture land in Bethel
and Industry Townships. On 2 Jun 1860, John Lane Kirkpatrick met with a very
serious accident. He had gone hunting with friends and they had all stopped to rest.
He momentarily leaned on the barrel of the shot gun and it accidentally discharged.
The gun blast necessitated the amputation of his left arm about four inches above his
elbow. He continued to farm after the amputation. He was a Republican in politics
and a Presbyterian in religion.
There were three children born of the marriage.
On the 1880 Census of Industry, McDonough Co., Illinois John appears with his wife, Mary, children Catherine, George and James. His nephews Pary [Perry] and
Benjamin and niece Hariet M. are also in the household.

Note From Kirkpatrick Pennington of Arkansas in his email dated 5 Jul 2003:
"George Melvin Kirkpatricks' birthplace, 1869, McDonough County, IL. (Ref. Photo of homestead)
I am unsure if it still exists in this form. George was the son of John Lane, Jr, who lost an arm in a hunting accident in 1861, just before the surrender of Fort Sumter, and as a result, never served in the Union Army, though his brother and cousins did do so."
OBITUARY
John L. Kirkpatrick, one of McDonough county's most respected citizens, died suddenly at his home in Macomb Tuesday morning at 10:40 o'clock, aged 67 years, 4 months and 8 days. Funeral services will be held at Ebenezer church today at 10 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Thompson of Macomb. Interment in the Camp Creek cemetery.
Mr. Kirkpatrick was for many years engaged in farming six miles northwest of Industry. About a year ago he sold his farm to his son, George, and moved to Macomb.
His death was sudden and unexpected, and is a severe shock to his wife, who has been delicate health for several years. He was taken sick with what was diagnosed as a case of indigestion. While quite sick he was able to be around and Monday afternoon went up town. In the evening, when he returned home, he did not feel so well and at about 7 o'clock a physician was summoned, who pronounced the ailment indigestion. Tuesday morning he was up and around the house a little, but was not feeling very well. About 10:30 he was sitting in a chair and his sister-in-law, Mrs. William Munson of Tina, Mo., who is visiting with him, gave him his medicine. His wife had a short time previous, while he was walking around the room advised him to lie down but he only laughed and said he felt all right. Mrs. Munson gave him his medicine and then steped out of the room. He was sitting in the chair and she noticed nothing pecular about him, but he said nothing to her. She started up stairs when Mrs Kirkpatrick called to her that she heard her husband make a pecular noise. She hurried to him and while he was sitting in his chair, his head had dropped and an examin- [some text missing here] physician was summoned and he arrived in a very few moments but life was extinct. It is supposed that indigestion was complicated with heart trouble, this being hereditary in the family, caused his death.
Deceased was born in Morgan county, near Concord, where he grew to manhood. He moved to this county in 1864 and on Sept. 15, 1867, was united in marriage with Miss Mary Munson, who survives him.
Most of his life was spent in farming. When a young man he met with an accident while hunting which resulted in the loss of one arm, near the elbow, but with this handicap he pushed ahead the harder and made a success of his work. He devoted his time to farming and stock raising and by careful attention to his business prospered. He was an earnest, christian man, square in his dealings with his fellow man.
He leaves besides his wife, two sons - George of Industry township and James G. of Bethel township. He leaves also one sister, Mrs. Charles Munson of Macomb.
and highly respected by all who knew him. A kind and loving father and husband, a true friend and neighbor, his loss will be felt by his family and his friends.

He was enumerated on the census in McDonough County, Illinois (1880, 1900); Marion County, Missouri (1910); McDonough County, Illinois (1920, 1930.)1,8 He was a Farm laborer (1900); farmer - general farming (1910 - 1930.)2,8 PARENTAGE OF HENRY CLAY DEAN OSBORN
It is my current belief that Henry Clay Dean Osborn was the son of Isaac James Osborn (son of Solomon Osborn and Dicey Smith) and Sarah Osborn (daughter of John Osborn and Francis Hackworth).
The following is a transcription of a probate record for the estate of Solomon Osborn. This particular document is dated 28th day of July 1880. I received the probate record from Delores "Dee" Allen. Dee is the compiler of the Lehman Ferrill Patterson Maternal Family Tree on Ancestry.com.
"That the said Solomon Osborn left surviving him the following named children: Louella Osborn, Almeda Osborn, Lorina Osborn, Alice Osborn, John Osborn and Noah Osborn, who are minors and William Osborn and Sarah Osborn, his wife; Louisa Flack; Arena Frisbie and Elisha Frisbie, her husband; D. Ann Smith and Peter Smith, her husband; Wm. McHaley and M. J. McHaley, his wife; Lyddia Smith and W. R. Smith, her husband; Nancy Griffin and John Griffin, her husband; Angelina Osborn; Sarah Osborn; Jeremiah Osborn; Sarah E. Osborn; Isiah Osborn; John Webb and his wife Elizabeth Webb, his wife; John S. Webb and Lucienda E. Webb; Samuel P. Wilhelms and Mary Wilhelms; and Henry C. Osborn (he is a minor); Joseph Osborn and Martah Osborn, his wife; F. M. Osborn and Josephene Osborn, his wife; Elijah Osborn and Lucinda Osborn, his wife. That the said male minors above mentioned are under twenty one years of age and the said female minors are under eighteen years of age. John W. Flack one of your petitioners is guardian of all the said minors, except the said Henry C. Osborn who has no guardian appointed in this State. Your petitioners therefore pray that a guardian may be appointed for the said Henry C. Osborn in his behalf. Wherefore in consideration of the premises your petitions pray that this court may appoint some discreet person as guardian for said minor heir to appear and defend his interest herein and that this court will order and direct your petitioner to sell the said real estate to pay said deficiency and to make such further order herein as to this court may seem proper."
In a subsequent email Delores said, "On another document is shows Harvey M. Shannon as being appointed guardian of Henry Osborn, minor."
Except for the spelling of the names, this is a remarkably accurate list of Solomon Osborn's children from two marriages. The only child missing is Isaac James Osborn, who died a number of years before Solomon Osborn's estate was probated.
The probate record suggests that Henry Clay Dean Osborn and his siblings were actually children of Solomon Osborn. My research suggests that Henry and his siblings really were the children of Isaac James Osborn and Sarah Osborn. I suspect that they were included in the probate record because their father had passed away. There would never have been any confusion if they had been identified as Solomon Osborn's grandchildren instead of his children.
