George W. St. John, 95, died on July 19, 2008.
He was born at the St. John home place in Watauga, Tennessee, to Josephine Thomas and James T. St. John on March 6, 1913.
The St. John children and several neighbors' children were home-schooled in the St. John's stone house. Two years later they walked through the fields to the new Barnes School, and later traveled by horse and buggy to the Johnson City Schools. He graduated in Electrical Engineering from the University of Tennessee during The Great Depression. In l935, he decided to come home and operate the family's mill, St. John Milling Co.
In l942, he enlisted in the United States Navy and attended officer's candidate school at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. He married Elizabeth (Libby) Bolton in route from Ithaca to Miami, Florida where he was reporting for further training. He was deployed on a destroyer with the Pacific Fleet as an engineering officer during World War II.
Upon returning home after the war, George continued to modernize the mill's equipment and convert the power source from a water wheel to electricity. Over the next sixty-five years, he expanded the business and took over the operation of the farm. George said that the business that he loved so dearly serves people he called friends instead of customers.
During his life George was very active in the community. He was President of the Barnes Community Club, a member of the Rotary Club of Johnson City, President of the Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Company of Washington County, and a board member of the Washington County Soil Conservation District. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Appalachian Regional Fair in 1974 and served as President from 1979-1991.
George was a member of Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church in Johnson City. He helped organize the Fellowship Sunday School Class. He was chairman of the Administrative Board, a trustee, an usher, and served as a chairman of many other committees.
George resided at Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City. His sister, Josephine, and many of his friends live there.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth (Libby) Bolton St. John, and his sisters, Margaret St. John and Martha Blair Sell.
He is survived by his sister, Josephine Roach, and his daughters, Betty Dawson and her husband Ron and Martha Eldred and her husband Preston. George's grandchildren are Jay Dawson, Libby Dawson, Blair Eldred and wife Paula, and Hilary Eldred Seagraves and husband Beau. He has one great grandchild, Olivia Eldred.
