NEWSPAPER ARTICLE - East Berlin News; East Berlin, Pennsylvania; November 15, 1929; page 3; columns 4-5 (Ancestry.com):

Three Held For Court On Liquor Charge
John W. Messersmith, York New Salem; Mr. and Mrs. John Strasbaugh, York, and Guy Brydges, formerly of Waynesboro, Virginia were committed to the York county jail Friday in default of bail, following a hearing held before Justice Sell, of Hanover.
Bail for Messersmith was set by Justice Sell at $3,000. For Mr. and Mrs. Strasbaugh, at $2,500 each, and for Brydges at $1,000.
Messersmith and Mr. and Mrs. Strasbaugh were charged on oath of Detective Crabbs as prosecutor, with "illegal manufacture, sale and possession of intoxicating liquor." Brydges was given a separate hearing, charged by Detective Crabbs as prosecutor, with being implicated with Messersmith and the Strasbaughs in the making, possession and sale of bootleg liquor.
Injury Led To Probe
The case grew out of the fact that Messersmith on October 15 was admitted to the Hanover hospital scalded from head to foot with first and second degree burns.
At that time it was reported that Messersmith had received his injuries from the explosion of a gas stove which he was repairing for Mrs. Strasbaugh at the home of her father, Peter Resh, West Manheim township, York county.
When the identity of Messersmith became known to Mr. Crabbs, the following day, he began an investigation. Messersmith having been involved in several bootleg liquor operations prior to the time of his receiving the burns which sent him to the Hanover hospital.
Found Moonshine Plant
Going to the Strasbaugh farm located in West Manheim township, Crabbs discovered the presence of stills in the cellar at the Strasbaugh farmhouse. Sending to Hanover for a search warrant, which was secured from Justice Sell, and taken by him by Acting Chief of Police Wolford, Crabbs and Wolford searched the cellar of the Strasbaugh farm house, finding therein two stills, two gallons of liquor, 24 barrels of mash, 25 pounds of yeast and other materials and equipment. These were confiscated and the stills and liquor given into the charge of the district attorney's office.
Testimony submitted placed Mrs. Strasbaugh in charge of the moonshine operations during the day time and Messersmith at night, with the knowledge of the operations attributed to Mr. Strasbaugh.

BURY CORPSE TODAY
Two York county families feared yesterday that the body of the woman taken from the Susquehanna river near the Marsh Run Army depot by two fishermen Friday was a relative.
John G. Strasbaugh, Hanover R. D. 4, a road worker, visited the M. A. Hoff funeral home at New Cumberland yesterday and was certain that the body of the woman was that of his daughter, Clotein Strasbaugh Plaford, who lived most recently in Brooklyn, N. Y.
Strasbaugh's son, Joseph Strasbaugh, 621 West Philadelphia street, this city, said he was informed that his father was sure "from all appearances" that it was Clotein. Newspaper descriptions of the woman prompted the father to make the trip to the New Cumberland funeral parlors.
While authorities thought the body was that of a woman 28 or 30, Strasbaugh gave his daughter's age as 34. She had last visited her relatives here in January, but since that time efforts to contact her were to no avail.
Left York 10 Years Ago
She had first left York ten years ago. She was a divorcee.
Coroner Zech also investigated the story of Ray F. Myers, 1623 West market street, who told the coroner that the newspaper description "fits exactly" that of his sister, Mrs. Mary Little.
He said when he last heard from her she was employed as a waitress in a Lemoyne, Pa., tap-room. Coroner Zach immediately contacted Lemoyne police and a search was begun there for her.
Late last night no reply had yet been received from the Lemoyne police. Dr. Zech said, however, that he expected none before today since it is doubtful the proprietors of tap-rooms could all be located Sunday.
To Inter Body Today
Meanwhile, Coroner Zech said he gave Undertaker Hoff orders to inter the body today. The coroner added however, that he must first obtain from Philadelphia an "unfit certificate" necessary under state laws, to show that the body was unfit for the anatomical society.
The York county board of commissioners will be asked to bury the body at public expense, the coroner said, unless relatives positively identify and claim the body.
Authorities described the body as follows: Height, five feet and six inches. Hair, henna. Eyes, brown. Weight, 125 to 130 pounds. Clothing -- green knit dress with three silver buttons at the neck, white shoes and flesh colored silk underclothing.

RIVER VICTIM IS IDENTIFIED
Clothing Is That Of Miss Edna Dale Welliver, 25, Harrisburg
WILL DISINTER BODY
A few hours after the body of a young woman found in the Susquehanna river at Marsh run Friday evening had been interred, as an unknown, relatives identified the clothing she had worn as those of Miss Edna Dale Welliver, 25, Harrisburg.
The young woman, a key puncher in the Liquor Control board offices, had not been at work since last Thursday, apparently going to work, but was not seen since then.
Two local families thought the body might be that of a relative. John G. Strasbaugh, Hanover R. D. 4, was sure the woman was his daughter, Mrs. Clotein Strasbaugh Plaford.
Ray F. Myers, 1628 East market street, told Coroner Zach Sunday that newspaper descriptions "fitted exactly" his sister, Mrs. Mary Little, who had been working as a waitress in a Lebanon restaurant.
Coroner Zach said last night that the body will be disinterred from Mt. Olivet cemetery this morning and burial conducted probably in the afternoon at a Harrisburg cemetery.
