The Rev. Donald Vernon, principal of Central Catholic High School, said, "Officer DeFrane is certainly a credit to the Lafayette Police Department and to his community."

Prison Escapee 'Sorry,' Surrenders to Police
"I was sorry five minutes after I escaped."
This is what Ernest Franklin Adams, 23, a state prison escapee, told Lafayette police Thursday afternoon when he surrendered.
Adams and two others prisoners walked away from an outside work detail Monday morning at Norman Beatty Hospital at Westville.
His two companions, one a lifer serving out a conviction for murder, were captured Tuesday at Greencastle.
Sgt. Kenneth K. DeFrane said he received a telephone call from Adams Thursday afternoon, and Adams agreed to meet DeFrane at Fourteenth and Kossuth Streets to surrender.
Sgt. DeFrane said he "spread the word" that Adams would be better off if he gave himself up. "He accepted the offer," DeFrane said.
Sgt. DeFrane said Adams told him he decided to escape and return to Lafayette to see his wife, who is about to give birth.
WORRIED ABOUT WIFE
"He said he was worried about her," DeFrane said.
DeFrane said Adams told him he was sorry he had excaped "five minutes later," but had decided to go ahead with the escape in order to see his wife.
The trio stole a car from a state highway garage near Westville, and later took another car at Brook.
Captured at Greencastle after they abandoned their car and fled on foot were Lester Meyer, 38, of Rockport, a lifer sentenced from Posey County on a first-degree murder conviction, and William Coffman, 32, of Greencastle, sentenced from Morgan County for non-support.
Adams was given a one to 10-year sentence to the state prison in Tippecanoe Circuit Court last May, where he was found guilty of theft. He was accused of taking a pickup truck from John E. Lehnen in Lafayette last March 30.
Adams was jailed pending his return to state prison at Michigan City.

5 Liquor Stores, Tavern Cited After Teen-Age 'Rumbles' [by Jack M. Alkire]
Gang fights between Southwestern and Jefferson High School pupils, in some instances involving the use of guns, have led directly to the citing of five Lafayette liquor stores and a tavern for selling liquor to minors, Mayor Donald W. Blue announced Monday.
In each instance of the teen-age "rumbles," the particpants were either drunk or had been drinking, Sgt. Kenneth K DeFrane, Lafayette police juvenile officer, declared.
Sgt. DeFrane said statements were obtained from dozens of boys in which they said they obtained liquor from the cited establishments.
He said that the juvenile drinkers were taken to the liquor stores and taverns for personal identification of the persons who sold them the liquor.
'ALL STEPS POSSIBLE'
Mayor Blue said the recent outbreak of juvenile troubles resulted in his directing Police Chief M. Dean Henderson and Sgt. DeFrane to take "all steps possible" to halt the sale of liquor to minors.
"We know that beer and whisky have caused 50 per cent of our recent juvenile problems," Sgt. DeFrame said.
"Besides the fights, drinking had been involved in numerous teen-age automobile accidents and has added to school truancy," he said.
VANDALISM ADMITTED
On another front, Sheriff James A. Fisher said his department took eight East Tipp High School boys into custody Sunday night after obtaining statements in which the boys admitted smashing 100 rural mailboxes in the past three months.
Drinking was not involved in the mailbox vandalism spree as far as can be determined, the sheriff and Deputy Joseph Erwin said.
As least three of the eight East Tipp pupils arrested are basketball players and track stars, the sheriff said. All were from good families, he said.
Chief Henderson and Sgt. DeFrane said state excise agents had worked closely with them on the Lafayette juvenile drinking problem.
The chief said several more liquor stores and taverns probably would be cited before the investigation was completed.
Sgt. DeFrane said the following stores and tavern have been cited for selling liquor to minors:
Faustich's Liquor Store, 1613 Kossuth St.
Lafayette Liquor Store, 2306 E. Main St.
Binz Liquor Store, 1721 E. Main St.
Federal Liquor Store, 203 Main St.
Drive-In Liquor Store, 1502 Schuyler Ave.
The Salem Street Tavern, 1626 Salem St.
Sgt. DeFrane said evidence had been turned over to the State Excise Department, and the cited liquor stores and taverns will be notified shortly as to when to appear for hearings.
Chief Henderson said his department received "excellent" cooperation from parents of the juveniles involved in the drinking incidents. In most cases, he said, statements were obtained from the juveniles in the presence of their parents.
Mayor Blue said the department also has received the cooperation of the local Liquor Store Owners Association and Tavern Owners Association in the investigations.
Sgt. DeFrame said quick action by police recently broke up a gang fight which might have resulted in serious injury or possible death to some of the youths involved.
At that time officers found two youths carrying loaded pistols, he said.
Sgt. DeFrane said some of the youths told him that shots had been exchanged in other skirmishes between rival gangs.
Much of the trouble, he said, has occorred near a drive-in at Jefferson Square, which served as a meeting point for the rival groups.
DESCRIPTION OBTAINED
The sheriff said the arrest of eight East Tipp High School boys resulted when a rural homeowner obtained a description and a license number of a car which several boys used when knocking down his mailbox.
Deputy Erwin reached the scene shortly after the incident and stopped the car as it came back near the place where the vandalism occurred.
The four occupants of the car implicated four other youths who had been with them on previous mail box raids, Erwin said.
In addition to 100 mailboxes, the eight boys, all in the 16 and 17 age group, admitted tearing down five stop signs, 15 road information signs and five housing addition signs.
The sheriff said the youths were turned over to county juvenile officers for prosecution. They also face possible federal action as a result of damaging mailboxes, the sheriff said.

Case Dismissal Hit By Arresting Officer [by Charles W. McClure]
The head of security operations for a local discount store has expressed dissatisfaction with the handling by the Tippecanoe County Prosecuting Attorney's office of a theft arrest he made last February.
Ken DeFrane, security officer for K-Mart, appeared in Lafayette City Court Friday for a trial scheduled for a man he arrested at K-Mart Feb. 7 on a third degree burglary charge.
DeFrane said that instead of a trial he found that the case had been dismissed by a deputy prosecutor March 12. DeFrane is a former Lafayette policeman.
"I had him, I had him good," DeFrane said of the case against the Florida man who was taken into custody, charged with possession of stolen property, a coat worth $37.
The man had entered K-Mart and attempted to obtain a refund, saying that the sport coat had been bought for him several days before. Actually the coat had only been on the rack for a couple of hours, DeFrane related.
The man was charged with third-degree burglary, bond set at $200 and a continuance granted in Lafayette City Court until Feb. 21.
On that date the man pleaded not guilty and his jury trial was set for April 6, according to the court docket.
On March 12 an entry of "nolle prosequi" was made, dismissing the case " . . . in the best interests of the State of Indiana."
Deputy prosecuting attorney Dan Teder, who signed the dismissal action, said Friday he could not remember the reasons for dismissing the case.
"I have no knowledge of that whatsoever, you'll have to check the docket sheet," Teder said.
"We get so many cases down there (City Court) we don't remember them all," he added.
Attorney John R. Gambs, who represented the defendant, commented Friday that "we didn't think that they (the prosecution) had a case."
Gambs said the defense suggested several reasons to drop the prosecution but that he didn't know why the "nol-pros" was signed. I suppose you'd better talk to the prosecuting attorney," Gambs said.
Gambs also observed that they must nol-pros 500 cases down there, well not that many, but a lot of cases a month."
Prosecutor David J. Crouse, observing that third-degree burglary is a felony, said Friday: "Of course the deputy (Teder) should have some recollection as to why he dismissed.
"Of course, they're human, sometimes they can't . . . you just forget."
DeFrane said a group from southern states has been working the refund racket, shoplifting property out of a store, then either carrying it back in for a refund at the same store or taking it to another of the same chain and asking for a refund.
"You can have all your security, but if you don't have any justice, you can just go fish," DeFrane said.
