House fire victim had been struck by a train [By Curt Slyder]
The father of a Lafayette man killed in a fire in his home Wednesday evening said his son was disabled, his health "deteriorating" in the weeks leading up to the fire.
Following an autopsy, the Tippecanoe County Corner identified the victim of the fire at 831 S. 30th St. as Bruce W. Laughner, 52. He lived alone in the home.
Police and fire investigators said the cause of the fire was likely a dropped cigarette. The coroners listed the cause of the fire and death as accidental.
Fire officials determined the fire began in the living room, where his body was discovered. The coroner said death was due to smoke inhalation.
Bruce Laughner's father, William Laughner of Lafayette, said Friday that the family is still struggling to come to grips with the loss. He said it's possible his son, who was a smoker, fell asleep in his wheel chair.
"He'd told my wife he was tired earlier," he said, recalling Wednesday's events. Later that evening, he and his wife got a phone call from their son's neighbor, telling them his house was on fire.
Bruce Laughner, a graduate of Jeff High School, was disabled in 1991 when he was struck by a train 1000 feet from County Road 900 East near Dayton.
According to Journal & Courier archives, Laughner had been lying in the tracks when the train struck him, causing severe leg and head injuries. The article said alcohol use was suspected.
William Laughner said that prior to the incident, his son had loved hunting and fishing, but after that he was unable to work.
He left three adult children and had been married two times, his father said.
"In the last six weeks, we saw him deteriorating if not by the day, then by the week. But we didn't expect it like this," he said.
He said the family was unsure what to do next. "We will just have to take life as it comes from here."
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hippensteel.
