Memorial service for Ethel M. Johnston, Portland, will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Waverly Heights Congregational Church, with private interment at Portland Memorial Mausoleum.

A native of Canyonville. Mrs. Johnston had lived in Portland since 1923. She was a retired Portland-area schoolteacher.
She is survived by a son, Jack F. Johnston, Portland; brother, Elmer Hughes, Portland, and two grandchildren.
The family suggests remembrances be contributions to Waverly Heights Congregational Church.

Note:: There are two Oregon Death Records. One gives the death as the 18th as does the above obituary which makes no sense since the death notice came out in the paper on the 10th. The second Oregon death record gives the date of death as the 8th. The 8th seems to be the correct date.

In the death, at age 95, of Professor William Albert Manning on February 29, 1972, Stanford University and its Department of Mathematics lost a man who gave them a lifetime of distinguished and faithful service.
Professor Manning was born in Salem, Oregon, on December 5, 1876, and spent his early life in Canyonville, Oregon. After graduating from high school he went to Nicaragua to visit his brother, and he spent a year working as a bookkeeper at a coffee plantation. There he began to develop a growing interest in mathematics, and he soon returned to Oregon where he entered Willamette University at Salem. After two and a half years he received, in 1900, his A.B. degree from Willamette. He then enrolled at Stanford University as a graduate student in the Department of Mathematics. At the same time he held an assistantship in the Department of Applied Mathematics from 1900 to 1902. He received his Ph.D. degree from Stanford University in 1904 with a dissertation "On the Primitive Groups of Classes 2p and 3p" prepared under the direction of Professor G. A. Miller. He began his long career as a member of the Stanford University faculty with his appointment in 1902 as instructor in the Department of Applied Mathematics. This was soon followed by his promotion to Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, and Professor of Applied Mathematics. In 1925, with the retirement of Professor Hoskins, the Department of Applied Mathematics was discontinued, and Professor Manning became a member of the faculty of the Department of Mathematics. He retired in 1942 with the title, Professor of Mathematics, Emeritus. In 1904-05 he did postdoctoral work in mathematics at the University of Paris, and in 1909-10 he was a visiting member of the mathematics faculty of the University of Illinois. Throughout his career he was a member of the American Mathematical Society and active in its affairs. In 1971 he received a Distinguished Alumnus award from Willamette University.
Professor Manning's principal research was in algebra, his specialty being the theory of groups of permutations in which he published many significant papers and to which he made important contributions. He guided the dissertations of a number of graduate students in this field. He was very generous with his time and effort in working with his students, and he succeeded in kindling in them the enthusiasm for the subject that was so much a part of his mathematical life. His respect for thorough and painstaking work provided an example that inspired many a students emulation - undergraduates as well as graduates. His great interest in teaching undergraduates was manifested throughout his academic life, and the sound mathematical training of a host of engineers, physicists, and mathematicians stemmed from his courses in the Departments of Applied Mathematics and of Mathematics. His classroom teaching
was vigorous, intellectually stimulating, and enhanced by an admirable clarity and wit.
Professor Manning's interests were broad and extended well beyond the realm of mathematics. He enjoyed the Classics, and he read - even memorized - volumes of Greek literature in the Greek language. He liked music and encouraged his family in the playing of various musical instruments, especially the piano, violin, cello - after his retirement, he himself took up playing the cello as a hobby. He was fond of hiking and camping; Yosemite was a favorite place for family camping trips, with walking trips to the high country. He was active in later years with Sierra Club groups, and he could be found walking from his campus home to Palo Alto until only one or two years before his death. In the last few years, until very recently, he was a familiar figure in the Faculty Club dining room where he took his lunch each week-day. His health was good until the last one or two years when he suffered slight strokes, but it was a heart attack early this year that resulted in his death. Although his wife, Esther, had died in 1954, he was able to live on in the family home on Alvarado Row on the Stanford campus where he has lived for the past forty-six years.
Professor Manning is survived by three of four daughters, Dorothy Smiley (Mrs. Malcolm Smiley) of Glenmont, New York, Rhoda Wood (Mrs. William Wood) of Lafayette, Louisiana, and Miss Sylvia Manning of San Jose, by his son, Professor Laurence A. Manning of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, and by three grandchildren.
We shall remember William Albert Manning as a true scholar and scientist, a fine teacher, a long time member of the University, and a genial friend.

UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI YEARBOOK

The 1930 University of Missouri Yearbook lists Malcolm F. Smiley as an assistant professor in the department of mathematics and Astronomy.

Note: Malcolm would have been 17 years old in 1930. It is somewhat difficult to rationalize his position with the University of Missouri with the fact that he is listed as a "soda clerk" in the 1940 Census.

Radio Beam Spots Meteors, Tells How Fast They Travel
BERKLEY, Nov. 19. --(AP)-- Two Stanford professors have revealed how a high frequency radio beam is being used to spot and clock meteors.
They are Professor Laurence A. Manning and Professor Oswald G. Villard, who made their report to the National Academy of Sciences.
This beam, scarely (sic) stronger than that of a small radio station, is pointed strait up. It Mushrooms out so that it covers about 80 per cent of the sky to a height of 50 to 90 miles.
When a meteor passes through the radio beam it reflects back some of the vibrations, which can be picked up with ear phones. Because the reflecting body is moving, it changes the frequency of the reflected wave, and the change shows up as a whistle in the ear phones.
This system has detected and clocked the speed of as many as 2,000 meteors in eight hours on ordinary nights and in about 10 times that many in similar intervals during meteor showers.
The beam has recorded meteor speeds up to 43 miles a second and down to 12 miles a second.
The reflected radio waves also tell the observers something about temperatures and pressures in the upper air through which guided missiles and space ships will move when and if they materialize.

With Prof. Laurence A. Manning, he recently carried out successful experiments measuring the speed and height of meteors by use of a continuous high-frequency radio wave directed at the sky.

From Goodspeed's History of Tennessee (Washington County), 1887:
J. F. Copp, the subject of the following sketch, is one of the most prosperous farmers in the First District of Washington County, Tenn., and was born in said county April 21, 1850, and is the son of Peter and Mary (Burgner) Copp. The father was born in Washington County, Tenn., in the year 1818, and is the son of Jacob and Mary (Walter) Copp*. Jacob was born in Shenandoah County, Va., and was of German lineage. He removed to Tennessee from Virginia in the early settlement of East Tennessee, and was a farmer by occupation. Our subject's father is also a farmer, and resides in the First District, Washington County, Tenn., and is in an advanced age. He has been a successful farmer, and is a universally respected citizen. He is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and is possessed of a zealous, religious spirit. The mother of our subject was born in Greene County, Tenn., in the year 1827, and is the daughter of Peter and Eva (Broyles) Burgner. She is the mother of three sons and one daughter, all living, viz.: William C., Jacob E., Eva E. and James M. She is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a kind and intelligent woman, and an affectionate mother, loved and esteemed by all who know her. Our subject was reared on the farm and educated in the country schools. He has devoted most of his life to farming but has been engaged in merchandising. He has been successful in his undertakings, and now owns and cultivates a fine farm of 200 acres, situated in the valley of the Nolichucky River. In 1873 he married Mary E. Walter, daughter of Peter Walter. One son, Bruce B., and one daughter, Birdie Beatrice, blessed this union. The mother died in 1879, in the twenty-fifth year of her age. In 1881 our subject married for his second wife, Catherine M. Painter, and two children, Flora M. and Fornie E.**, have blessed this marriage. Our subject is a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church, and in politics is a Democrat.

Notes:
* It is hard to believe but the paternal grandparents of Jacob Forney Copp (1850 - 1922) who married Mary Edna Walter (1856 - 1880) were Jacob Copp (1779 - 1842) and Mary Walter (1786 - 1865).
** The 1900 Census lists their children as Myrtle A., Ethel H., Susie W., Roxie L. and Crawford S.
